Book Design: 6 Amazing Summer Reads

Summer is not only for beach trips and backyard picnics, it's also for catching up on reading everything from magazines to great novels. There’s nothing like lying by the pool and basking in the warm weather with a good book, especially one with a gorgeous cover that you just can’t stop staring at. Plus, it doubles as great decor sitting atop a bookshelf in your cute apartment.

Got any beautiful summer reads lined up in your to-be-read pile? If you’re looking to add a few more, here’s a list of interesting books with to-die-for covers—just throw one in your Punchdrunk Panda bag and you’re good to go.

A Thousand Pieces of You (Firebird #1) by Claudia Gray

Author Claudia Gray’s A Thousand Pieces of You is about a young girl who chases her father’s killer through multiple dimensions where she becomes alternate versions of herself and encounters other versions of people she knows. Sounds trippy, right? Simply looking at that beautiful cover takes you to different worlds, so you know you’re in for a ride with this one. What’s a better way to spend your summer than to visit alternate universes without physically going anywhere?

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner is another sci-fi book that will take you places beyond your imagination. You can probably tell from the stunning cover that the story takes place among the stars. Rich girl, Lilac, and young soldier, Tarver, find themselves on a strange planet after their spaceliner runs into some trouble and they are left to depend on each other to survive. Yes, it’s a love story, too, so if you’re not really into science fiction but love a good romance, you can give this a shot. Even if it doesn't end up being a fave, the luminous cover is certainly worth displaying.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Described by reviewers as magical and imaginative, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is about a mysterious night-only circus that appears out of nowhere and its two young magicians who are competing, fall for each other. The book was first published in 2011 and has since appeared with several covers, but the one from the first U.S. edition still has that dark charm that draws you in.

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

The cover of Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter makes you long for a summer vacation somewhere as quaint and colorful (perhaps Batanes?). The novel is about an elderly Italian man’s search for the American woman he had a connection with several decades ago. This book is funny, romantic and perfect for summer.

The Vacationers by Emma Straub

You have to admit that from the title alone, this is a book that seems like the perfect novel when you’re on a break or dreaming of your next trip. Throw in that whimsical, artsy and illustrative cover and it just screams “summer read.” The Vacationers by Emma Straub is about a family who goes on a two-week trip to Mallorca with relatives and friends. Of course, nothing ever goes as planned and their vacation becomes more interesting than they expected.

Between The Notes by Sharon Huss Roat

Between The Notes by Sharon Huss Roat is about 16-year-old Ivy whose life is turned upside down when she and her family lose their house and are forced to move from an affluent neighborhood to an area that’s considered the “wrong side of the tracks.” The cover is not only easy on the eyes but so intriguing that it makes you want to own this book, if only for the artwork.

Whether the cover of a book is pretty or not, it really is what’s inside that counts, right? But that doesn’t mean we can’t admire the stunning art work on these literary babies (maybe we can judge a book by its cover, after all)!
